FIGS 0009: Navigate Your Science Degree
FIGS 0009: Navigate Your Science Degree is a first-year non-credit course designed to help students explore and plan their paths through a science degree with career goals in mind.The course will help students:
Identify their natural strengths and academic interests
Explore science-related career options
Match their career goals to program offerings and course selection in preparation for second-year registration (March 2020)
Find out about volunteer and paid-work opportunities relevant to their major and career goals
Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility The Office of Sustainability is looking for students for focus groups on Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility. Self-study teams have been created to work on reports for the new University Strategic Planning Process. One of the eight self-study teams is exploring the theme of Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility across the University in curriculum, operations, and research. From now until mid-March, existing and new data from focus groups, meetings and surveys will be collected, analyzed and formulated into a study report that provides a snapshot of where we are now and strategies for the future. Rochelle Owen, Executive Director Office of Sustainability, and Peter Tyedmers, Professor in the School for Resource and Environmental Studies have been tasked to lead the production of this report with the support of a larger team of interested colleagues. *A $25 gift grocery gift card will be provided to all student attendees. Focus group sizes are set to include 8-12 participants. In the event, there is more interest than seats available, representation and sign-up time will be considered.
The following general focus groups have been scheduled:
Leaders of Student Societies: Monday, January 20. 4:00 – 5:30 pm, Collaborative Health Education Building (CHEB 221), 5793 University Avenue.
Agricultural Campus (Students, faculty and staff): Wednesday, January 22. 3:00 – 4:30 pm, Principal’s Boardroom (Cumming Room 104).
General Student Population: Friday, January 24. 4:00 – 5:30 pm, Collaborative Health Education Building (CHEB 221), 5793 University Avenue.
The purpose of the focus group is to collect information for the study report.To confirm your participation in the focus group contact: Kareina D’Souza at the Office of Sustainability. Kareina will send you an email confirmation and meeting request. A short background paper will be sent before the focus groups. Any questions can be directed to rethink@dal.ca.
New Course: BIOL 4039, Special Topics - Principles of Indigenous Medicine This course is a holistic, two-eyed seeing course highlighting indigenous medicine’s principles in ceremony, concepts of health and wellness, biochemistry, ethnopharmacology, practice and discovery. This course introduces indigenous ways of knowing medicine, important natural products, their biosynthesis, the drug discovery process, synthetic biology, and indigenous style formulations and decolonizing medicine practices.
