Senate

The Senate defines and pursues the academic mission of Dalhousie, and establishes and regulates academic policy, standards, and procedures.

Who we are

The Senate is the senior academic decision-making body where students, faculty, staff, and administrators discuss academic university issues and reach conclusions on the policies and actions to be taken by the university.

The central role of the Senate is to define and pursue the academic mission of Dalhousie. 

The Senate is responsible for the establishment and regulation of academic policy, standards, and procedures. The Senate is empowered to act on academic matters and regulations of the university community and is responsible for protecting, promoting, and enhancing academic standards, quality, and integrity at the university.

Senate Constitution

The Senate Constitution sets out the mandate and operating procedures for Senate, including: 

  • Function

  • Principles and values 

  • Membership 

  • Senate leadership

  • Meeting procedures 

  • Committees of Senate 

The Constitution is interpreted in accordance with the Statutes of Nova Scotia relating to Dalhousie University, which specify the jurisdiction and authority of the Senate.
