Monday, August 12: Meet a Scientist outreach event

On Monday, August 12, the Faculty of Science will be hosting our "Meet a Scientist" outreach event in which attendees are invited to chat with faculty and grad students from across our departments and programs and learn more about the wide range of research being conducted. 

Please share this free, family-friendly event with anyone who may be interested in attending, including future students, alumni, and members of the public curious about science. All members of the Dal community are of course welcome to drop by!

Summer Institute Series: Academic Integrity in the Faculty of Science

Date: Tuesday, August 13
Time: 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Format: Milligan Room, 8th floor, Life Sciences Centre (Biology wing)

Course instructors (including PTAs and grad students preparing to teach in future semesters) are invited join us to meet our current complement of Academic Integrity Officers (AIOs), learn about the process and procedures for academic integrity violations in the Faculty of Science, and discuss course and assessment design focused on preventative measures.

Registration is not required. Coffee and cookies will be provided.

Dal battery innovation centre receives $10.15M in federal funding

Last week, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, visited Dal to announce $10.15 million in funding for the Canadian Battery Innovation Centre (CBIC). Minister Wilkinson also toured the battery labs and met with graduate and undergraduate student researchers.

Set to open in fall 2025 in the Sir James Dunn Building, the CBIC will be the country’s first university-based prototyping and testing facility. Read more on the funding announcement and the Minister's visit in Dal News

Survey: Inclusive STEM Teaching Joint Community of Practice

The Faculties of Science and Computer Science recently hosted the first Inclusive STEM Teaching Joint Community of Practice at Dal, which aimed to foster a supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students to discuss and develop inclusive teaching practices in STEM education. 

This community of practice will be held again next year and the organizers would greatly appreciate your feedback, even if you were unable to attend or were not interested. Please share your experiences and ideas through this survey.

Tech@RBC Women's Advisory Program

Applications for the Tech@RBC Women's Advisory Program are open until August 16. Undergraduate students focusing on computer science, engineering, or technology are invited to apply for this mentorship and networking program. Interested students can learn more and apply on the RBC website.

Call for applications: Flight 302 Legacy Award

42 non-renewable scholarships valued at $10,000 each are available through the Flight 302 Legacy Award, which commemorates the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 tragedy on March 10, 2019. Current students can visit the Universities Canada website to learn more about eligibility and apply online for the award. Applications are due on August 20, 2024.

Sept.1 deadline: 2025 QES program applications

Applications for winter/spring 2025 placements as part of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarships (QES) program will close on September 1.

The QES program offers undergraduate students the chance to complete a funded internship for credit at the Cape Eleuthera Institute in The Bahamas. Applicants should have an interest and academic background in environmental science, sustainability, marine science or a related field, and be in at least their third year of studies at the time of the internship placement. Visit Dal’s QES website for complete details on the three types of internships that can be applied for (marine research and conservation, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable systems). Any questions can be directed to Dr. Tarah Wright (tarah.wright@dal.ca), coordinator of the QES Program at Dal.
