An education with global impact

Dalhousie’s ocean expertise attracts students from across the country and around the world. With students engaged in undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral ocean research, we are building a new generation of marine experts.

Pioneering ocean learning

Dalhousie was one of the first universities to embrace oceanography and, in 1971, we were the first university in Canada with an Oceanography Department. We were also the first university in Canada to offer:

International ocean studies

Our collaborations with international partners allow students to build their technical and research skills preparing them for the international research and business environment. Students can take part in a number of projects including:

  • The Transatlantic Ocean System Science and Technology (TOSST) research school joins Dal with the Helmholtz Research School for Ocean Science and Technology to create a transatlantic training environment. Research addresses key issues facing the North Atlantic, including ocean-atmosphere dynamics, ecosystem hotspots and seafloor structures.
