Mi'kmaw History Month

Today we commemorate Treaty Day, marking the 1752 Peace and Friendship Treaty. This treaty is a guiding principle for our relationships on Mi'kma'ki lands and is central to our land acknowledgments. The treaties are meant to protect Indigenous ways of life, founded on reciprocity and respect.

This year also marks the 31st Mi’kmaw History Month, first proclaimed in 1993 by Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy. The theme for this year is food and its significance in Mi’kmaw culture: “From sharing pɨteway (tea) at kitchen tables to harvesting and safeguarding traditional sources, food is central to Mi’kmaw life.”
