Emancipation Day
August 1 is designated Emancipation Day in Canada, marking the date in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire.
Emancipation Day is an opportunity to reflect, educate and engage about the role of slavery in Canadian and global history and the ongoing fight against racism and discrimination. Today, and all days, we celebrate the achievements and perseverance of Black and African diaspora individuals and communities at Dalhousie, across Canada and globally.
This new resource will provide our community with a robust and interactive calendar, highlighting the range of important religious and cultural observations that recognizes and celebrates the diversity of faiths and cultural observances celebrated within the University.
Celebrate Emancipation Day with a dynamic showcase of artists and writers tonight beginning at 6 p.m. at the Halifax Public Library. Presenters include Oluseye, Andre Fenton, Guyleigh Johnson, and Francesca Ekwuyasi. Event details.
A History Exposed: The Enslavement of Black People in Canada opens this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, created with guest curator Dr. Afua Cooper. Event details.
