For March 21, 2024

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on March 21 to mark the anniversary of when police in Sharpeville, South Africa killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960. The UN's 2024 theme is “A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development,” linked to the final year of the International Decade for People of African Descent.

Each year, the Office of Equity & Inclusion recognizes the occasion by hosting its annual Human Rights and Equity Conference. The 2024 event focuses on racism in sport and recreation and features virtual panel discussion, a film screening, and a virtual evening keynote featuring Dr. Ivan Joseph on anti-racism in sport. Learn more about the conference and register for individual sessions.
