August 1 is designated Emancipation Day in Canada, marking the date in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire.
Emancipation Day is an opportunity to reflect, educate and engage not only about the role of slavery in Canadian and global history, but in the ongoing fight against racism and discrimination. Today, and all days, we celebrate the achievements and perseverance of Black and African diaspora individuals and communities at Dalhousie, across Canada and globally.
