International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on the day police in Sharpeville, South Africa killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960. This year's UN theme marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Campus events happening today include the Office of Equity & Inclusion's 3rd Annual Human Rights and Equity Conference, focused on the theme of "The Role of Curriculum in Combating Racism"; and Speak It: From the Heart of Black Nova Scotia, a virtual film screening and discussion featuring Sylvia Hamilton and hosted by the Black Student Advising Centre.
