Reminder: Preparations before you leave campus for the holiday break

Posted by Office of Environmental Health and Safety on December 21, 2022 in Facilities Management

With the end of 2022 fast approaching, we jointly ask that all Dalhousie community members help us protect the campus from freeze-ups or other issues, and to keep it both safe and energy efficient over the holidays.

Before you leave for the holiday break, we are asking that you:

  • Close and lock all windows, including any labs/offices/other.
  • Set any thermostats to 18°C (65°F).
  • Power down and unplug any computers or other electronic equipment, especially those that are not connected to surge protectors.
  • Remove any perishables food or beverage from desks, offices, and/or refrigerators.
  • Secure any loose outdoor furniture, or bring it indoors

And for any laboratories that are pausing their activities over the break, in addition to the above please ensure that you also:

  • Properly power down and/or disconnect any laboratory equipment (if it is safe to do so).
  • Turn off any process gasses, process liquids, or water supplies to equipment (if it is safe to do so).
  • Properly stopper/cap, and store, any chemicals that may be present.
  • Fully close all fumehood sashes before departure.
  • Release pressure on any systems that may still be under load, such as hydraulic cylinders.
  • Ensure any laboratory backup systems that might be in-place are in good working order (batteries fully charged, gas cylinders full, etc.)

We wish you a safe, restful, and happy holiday break – see you in 2023!
