Teaching Assistant and Marker postings: Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering is hiring Markers and Teaching Assistants for the Fall 2022 term for Engineering (ENGI) and Complementary Studies (CPST) courses.

ENGI 1103 Engineering Design I Dr. Scott Bishop:

2022 Fall Term:

Teaching Assistants: 12 positions for 110 hours each.

Markers: 8 positions for 95 hours each.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering  

Teaching Assistants will assist with ENGI 1103 Engineering Design I:

· Assist with/running the CAD/SolidWorks labs at Dunn 301A (Studley Campus), and also the workshop labs in the EMERA IDEA Building (Rm 3012 Sexton Campus).

· Assist with invigilating midterm exam.

· Assist with organizing and marking presentations.

· Assist with marking final design project reports.

· Assist with organizing marker duties and assignment delivery and pickup from markers.

Teaching Assistant must possess a university degree in Engineering or, if currently enrolled as a university student, a strong academic record.

Experience with SolidWorks is required.

Markers will assist with ENGI 1103 Engineering Design I:

· Mark weekly assignments, logbooks, and assist with marking midterm exam.

· Assist with invigilating midterms exam.

· Record marks on Brightspace

Markers must possess a university degree in Engineering or, if currently enrolled as university students, have a strong academic record (engineering students applying must have completed ENGI 1103 and ENGI 1203). Markers should have proficient writing skills, basic knowledge of grammar and writing style, and an ability to work to deadlines. Prior marking experience is preferred but not required.

ENGI 2102 Thermo-Fluid Engineering I Dr. Mahshid Hadavand :

2022 Fall Term:

Teaching Assistants: 3 positions for 110 hours each and 1 position for 130 hours.

Markers: 3 positions for 95 hours each and 1 position for 90 hours.

Lab demonstrators: 2 positions for 60 hours each.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering  

Duties

Tutorial TAs: assisting with and/or teaching the tutorial sessions and marking midterm and final exams.

Lab TA: supervising the lab sessions and assisting with troubleshooting the equipment.

Markers: marking assignments

All TAs and Markers must be available for the midterm and final exam time for invigilation.

 Qualifications:

An understanding of the basics of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The applicant should be able to:

·      estimate the thermodynamic properties of fluids using tabulated data, charts and correlations.

·      apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics to analyze closed systems, steady-flow devices, and power and refrigeration cycles.

·      perform hydrostatic pressure calculations.

·      apply the mechanical energy balance and Bernoulli’s equation to fluid flow problems.

·      calculate friction losses for fluids flowing through pipes and fittings.


CPST 1103 Technical Communication and Engineering Fundamentals I Mr. James Ross:

2022 Fall Term:

Teaching Assistants: 13 positions for 45 hours each and 1 position for 65 hours.

Markers: 10 positions for 50 hours each and 4 positions for 10 hours each.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering  

Teaching Assistants will conduct eight tutorials

Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Conducting tutorial activities on Mondays from 6:05pm-7:25pm.

2. Attending team meetings every other week during the period of the tutorials (time to be determined).

3. Assessing brief activities conducted during tutorials and recording tutorial attendance.

4. Contributing to the marking of CPST assignments.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Teaching Assistant must possess a university degree or be currently enrolled as an undergraduate with a strong academic record. Should have proficient writing skills, basic knowledge of grammar and writing style, and an ability to communicate effectively to a diffuse team. Prior teaching assistant experience is preferred, but not required. Prior experience managing small teams is likewise preferred but not required.

Access to a laptop that can be used for tutorials is not required for this position but is an asset. Please indicate in your application if you have access to a laptop.

Markers will assist with CPST1103

Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Marking technical, professional, and academic writing assignments in Brightspace.

2. Giving general reports to the instructor regarding student performance on assignments.

3. Attending two meetings of the marking team during the semester.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Markers must possess a university degree or, if currently enrolled as university students, have a strong academic record (engineering students applying must have completed CPST1103 and CPST1203). Markers should have proficient writing skills, basic knowledge of grammar and writing style, and an ability to work to deadlines. Prior marking experience is preferred but not required.

CPST 3030 Engineering in Society II Mr. James Ross:

2022 Fall Term:

Markers: 2 positions for 45 hours each.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering  

Marking assignments for CPST3030

Marking duties entail:

1. Marking essays (one short essay assignment and one term paper). Note that the term paper includes a proposal deliverable and a formal outline deliverable across the course of the term.

2. Marking group project reports.

3. Evaluating student contributions to asynchronous discussion forums.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Marker must possess a university degree or be currently enrolled as an undergraduate with a strong academic record. Should have proficient writing skills, basic knowledge of grammar and writing style, and an ability to communicate effectively to a diffuse team. Prior teaching assistant experience is preferred, but not required. Prior experience managing small teams is likewise preferred but not required.
