POSITION: TA65 (Teaching Assistant 65 hours, one position Fall term: September- November 2022)

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Faculty of Science, Integrated Science (Biology)

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist in the development and delivery of four field trips for the Integrated Science Program (SCIE 1506). This includes preparation for and guiding field trips, assisting with development of species identification materials, vetting field trip exercises, managing and cleaning class field data, and marking exercises for 80 students. Field trips include biology content as well as content integrated with Earth Sciences.

Must be available for four field trips, scheduled Thursdays or Friday afternoons September-November. Must be available to organize and distribute field equipment prior to scheduled field trips.

Bioblitz: Friday September 23rd

Coastal Dunes: Thursday September 29th Horton Bluff: Thursday October 6th

Intertidal Ecology and Bogs and Barrens: Thursday October 20th

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Minimum upper-level undergraduate student in Biology/Marine Biology, Environmental Science or a related field. Field experience in terrestrial ecology, marine biology, and biodiversity, with expertise in identification of a wide range of species (plants, lichen, macroalgae, and macroinvertebrates) is essential. Previous marking and teaching experience is an asset. A graduate degree (completed or in progress) in a relevant field is an asset. Current first aid is an asset. Teach first-year biology labs (must be available between 1:30-5:30 PM on Friday afternoons). Attend a 1-hour pre-lab meeting at a mutually agreed upon time and vet laboratory exercises. Mark student exercises, upload marks, return marked assignments within 1 week, meet with students online to discuss marked assignments if requested.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Comfortable with concepts and techniques at the introductory level in all aspects of introductory biology, especially biodiversity, cell biology, energy and metabolism, physiology and molecular biology. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing an honours or graduate degree in Biology or a related program and candidates with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence. Previous experience with the Integrated Science program is an asset.

WORK ASSIGNMENT:             Support the first-year writing component of the Integrated Science Program (SCIE 1506/1507). Mark several formal written assignments for PHIL 1050.03, Ethics in Science, using a marking rubric. Teach weekly tutorials (Mondays 9:30-1030am and/or 10:30-11:30am) including writing workshops. Meet with students individually.

REQUIREMENTS OFPOSITION: Undergraduate degree completed in philosophy, graduate degree completed or in progress in science, philosophy, or a related field, and a strong interest and experience in teaching writing and critical thinking skills. Candidates with a background in science as well as philosophy will have priority. Previous experience with the Integrated Science program will be considered an asset.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Duties include setting up and assisting the teaching of online labs for the 1st year Psychology/Neuroscience component of Integrated Science (DISP; SCIE 1506 and SCIE 1507), marking completed labs, and entering grades. The TA will be available during scheduled lab time (Fridays 1330-1730), and occasionally at other times, to assist the instructor with teaching and coordinate additional teaching assistance.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Successful applicants will have a background in Psychology or Neuroscience (upper level undergraduate or graduate), strong presentation and organizational skills, and an interest in science literacy. Previous experience as a teaching assistant at the Introductory level, particularly in DISP, is an asset.

TITLE: Statistics TA45, Integrated Science Program

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor in the delivery of the Statistics component of the Integrated Science Program (SCIE 1506). Teach and support first-year statistics tutorials using the statistical software package R. Assist with preparing and administering homework and lab exercises on Brightspace. Compile student-collected data from SCIE 1506 activities (using Google sheets). Mark student exercises and upload marks within 1 week. The TAs will be available during scheduled tutorial time (Tuesdays 8:30- 10:00 am), and occasionally at other times for office hours and to assist the instructor with teaching and marking.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Solid working knowledge of statistics at the 1st and 2nd year level and with using statistical tools to explore different types of data.

Proficient with the software package R. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing an honours or graduate degree or related program with a statistical focus, or a related program. Previous experience with the Integrated Science program, applications of statistics to other disciplines, and demonstrated potential for teaching excellence are assets.

TITLE:                                Writing in Science TA65, Integrated Science Program

WORK ASSIGNMENT:                  Support  the  first-year  writing  and  research  project

component of the Integrated Science program (DISP), specifically for first year students writing a formal field trip report on a coastal dune study. Mark individual written assignments (introduction + methods, results + discussion, final paper) submitted by 25 students. Assist teaching a coastal dune field trip at Conrad Beach (September 29th 8:30am-5pm). Provide extensive feedback on written papers and return marked assignments within one week. Follow the Integrated Science writing class guidelines. Hold office hours and meet with students (can be virtually) to discuss their work. Coordinate marking with the DISP Writing in Science Instructor. Support the Writing in Science Instructor in the overall delivery of the writing component of DISP (i.e. posting marks to Brightspace).

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:    Undergraduate degree completed in a physical sciences or life sciences discipline. Research experience at the post- graduate level, and an interest in teaching scientific writing and research skills are preferred. Previous experience evaluating formal scientific writing is an asset. Previous field study experience and experience with an integrated science program are assets.
