The University of King’s College’s Contemporary Studies Program invites applications for a part-time instructor who would be responsible for teaching the following course in the Winter term (January-April 2023):

CTMP 2115.03   The Idea of Race in Philosophy, Literature, and Art
What is race? How does racism impact our sense of self and the communities in which we live? The first part of this class examines the emergence of the modern idea of race, in relation to European expansionism and colonialism, philosophical ideas of the time, and the development of science. The second part of the class focuses on contemporary conceptions of race and their relations to culture, history, ideology, science, and everyday lived experience. We will consider contemporary debates on race and racism in the works of thinkers, writers, artists, and social activists, reflecting on the concept of white privilege and on the intersections of race, class, and gender.

For 2022/23 the class is scheduled in the winter term, Monday & Wednesday, 10.05-11.25.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding office hours. If eligible, the candidate may be required to supervise a teaching assistant(s). This position reports to the Director of the Program.

Qualifications and Experience:  Applicants should possess, as a minimum requirement, a Master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies or a relevant discipline or field of research, although a Ph.D. is preferred. Expertise in critical race theory will be an asset. Prior experience teaching at the university level is required.

Pay Rate: Remuneration is based upon qualifications and experience.

To apply: Applicants must submit a cover letter stating their qualifications for, and interest in, teaching the class and a curriculum vitae by Monday, August 22, 2022 to:
