Limited Term Appointment-Contemporary Studies Program/Foundation Year Program

Application Deadline: November 22, 2021

The University of King's College invites applications for a four-year, Limited Term Appointment in Contemporary Studies and Foundation Year Program, commencing 1 July 2022. This full-time appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to teach four classes per year (two each semester) in the Contemporary Studies Program, and to lead three tutorial groups in the Foundation Year Program.

The Contemporary Studies Program is an interdisciplinary, combined honours program offered jointly by the University of King's College and Dalhousie University. It focuses on ideas, thinkers, and movements that have contributed to new understandings of the world in the period between the end of the 19th century and the present day.

The Contemporary Studies portion (two/thirds) of the appointment will require the successful candidate to teach a number of courses:
1) the second-year core classes: CTMP 2001 “Modern Social and Political Thought: The Politics of Recognition,” which focuses on recognition as a guiding theme in the nineteenth century social and political thought; and CTMP 2002, “Modern Social and Political Thought: Challenging Recognition,” which inquires into the blindspots in the modern politics of recognition, drawing on diverse theoretical resources.
2) two additional classes from amongst the following: CTMP 2322.03 “The Experience of Others in Philosophy, History and Literature”; CTMP 2330.03 “Reflections on Death”; CTMP 3125.03 “The Concept of Memory in Late Modernity: Commemoration, (Re)presentation, Trauma”; CTMP 3311 “Culture, Politics, and the Postcolonial Condition”; and CTMP 2150 “Society, Politics, and Literature”).

In the second or third year of the appointment, the successful candidate may be invited to construct a new class related to the area of their expertise.

The Foundation Year Program is an integrated core-texts study of seminal works in the Western tradition. It includes works from across the traditional disciplines – works of philosophy, history, science, literature, theatre, political theory – and it ranges from the ancient world to the present day.

This component of the position will require the successful candidate to attend lectures and conduct tutorials for our large freshman cohort. The candidate may also be invited to lecture once or twice annually in the program.

Contemporary Studies and the Foundation Year Programs are interested in candidates who could help enhance its ongoing curricular diversity initiatives. Some previous experience in one or both of the Programs will be considered an asset.

The University of King’s College is a small, teaching-intensive, liberal arts university with a lively and accomplished scholarly community, offering joint programs and degrees with Dalhousie University, Canada’s largest research university east of Montreal.
