Call for Nominations for Chair of Senate

SENATE NOMINATING COMMITTEE

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST AND NOMINATIONS FOR

CHAIR OF SENATE

Members of the University community who wish to submit expressions of interest or nominations for the position of Chair of Senate should send these to the attention of  Marilyn Macdonald, Chair, Senate Nominating Committee, University Secretariat, Room 210, Henry Hicks building or to senate@dal.ca by December 7, 2018.

This position is for a three-year term from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2022.

CHAIR OF SENATE

The Chair of Senate provides general oversight of the business of the Senate, chairs meetings of the Senate and the Senate Planning and Governance Committee, and has oversight responsibility for the reviews of Faculties, Libraries and Affiliated Institutions as defined in section 3.4(c) of the Senate Constitution.  The Chair also sets the agenda for Senate meetings as specified in this Constitution at section 5.4.

It should be noted that, in addition to the role and duties as specified in the Senate Constitution, the Chair of Senate represents Senate at a wide variety of University events, participates at spring and fall convocation ceremonies (particularly in the awarding of honorary degrees), and sits as an ex officio member of Dalhousie's Board of Governors.

Persons eligible to be considered for the position of Chair of Senate will:

  • Have served a minimum of one year on Senate within the preceding 10 years;
  • Have an academic appointment of 50% FTE or greater; and
  • Not be on leave.

It should be noted that Senators elected as Officers of Senate will receive automatic extensions of their terms as members of Senate until the completion of their term(s) as an officer.   Senate Officers are also excluded from the DFA bargaining unit while serving as an Officer.
