POSITION:                PART-TIME ACADEMIC INSTRUCTOR

TERM:                         September 4, 2018 – December 4, 2018

WORK ASSIGNMENT: 

Lecturer for NURS5735.03 – Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurse Practitioners (Fall term of the academic year 2018-2019)

The focus of this course will be on clinical applications of drug therapies relevant to nurse practitioner practice.  Students will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge in order to integrate pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic concepts for a chosen client population/discipline in their clinical setting and practicums.  Students will gain therapeutic knowledge that includes the mechanism of actions, usual dosages, absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, and therapeutic use of medications. Principles of management for side effects and drug interactions of medications frequently encountered by specialty and primary health care nurse practitioners will be reviewed and applied.  Additionally, students will be provided with the opportunity to identify and utilize timely and appropriate drug information resources that are applicable to their daily practice. Legal and ethical responsibilities related to pharmacotherapeutic interventions are addressed.

This is a 3-credit hour course with lectures being held on Thursdays, 16:05 – 18:55, from September 4, 2018 until December 4, 2018. This appointment is a half-credit course and runs from September 1, 2018 through December 21, 2018. The part-time academic instructor reports directly to the Associate Director, Graduate Studies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development of teaching and learning activities related to the course
  • Delivery and co-ordination of the course
  • Assessment and evaluation of student learning
  • Use of the course management system (Brightspace) for  course delivery
  • Responding to student queries about coursework
  • Attending initial instruction with Instructional Learning  services
  • Participation in course discussions within the program
  • Develop and administer examinations
  • Submission of grades
  • Follow up with students as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Nursing, or related field, with relevant expertise and teaching experience. PhD preferred.

WORK ASSIGNMENT:  The part-time academic instructor will be responsible for teaching NURS5487.03 – Principles and Theories for Health and Disease Management in Family All Ages Nurse Practitioner Practice (Sections 01 & 06: Fall term of the academic year 2018-2019)

This course is designed for nurse practitioner students who have chosen the Family All Ages focus for their future practice. Students will utilize a family focused approach in assessing clinical and research literature as a means of developing competence in health promotion, health maintenance and cultural sensitivity in caring for clients in the community setting.
FORMAT COMMENTS: Seminar with practicum component

This is a 3-credit hour course consisting of 3 lecture hours per week and held on Fridays, 14:35 – 17:25, from Sept. 4, 2018, until Dec. 4, 2018.

This contract runs from September 1, 2018 until December 21, 2018. The part-time academic instructor reports directly to the Associate Director, Graduate Program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development of teaching and learning activities related to the course
  • Delivery and co-ordination of the course
  • Assessment and evaluation of student learning
  • Use of  the Dalhousie Course Management System for course delivery
  • Responding to student queries about coursework
  • Attending initial instruction with Instructional Learning services
  • Participation in course discussions within the program
  • Develop and administer examinations

  • Meet with preceptors regarding course objectives and student progress
  • Follow up with students and preceptors during placements

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Nursing, or related field, with relevant expertise and teaching experience. PhD preferred.

Co-Lecturer for NURS2720.03 – Health & Healing I: Pathophysiology and Therapeutics (Fall term of the academic year 2018-2019)

Students are introduced to and explore the fundamentals of health and disease patterns, the role of genetics, developmental biology and environment. Cellular mechanisms, inflammatory and infectious responses and cellular biology of cancer are investigated. Diagnosis and therapeutic concepts including preventive therapies and pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions with consideration of age and cultural variations are introduced.

This is a 3-credit hour course taught by two co-lecturers. Lectures are held twice-weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 13:05 – 14:25 and include tutorials held on Thursdays from 14:35 – 15:25. The final exam will be held during the week of November 26, 2018.

Co-Lecturer for NURS2750.03 – Health & Healing II: Pathophysiology and Therapeutics (Fall term of the academic year 2018-2019)

This course focuses on integrating knowledge of disease, diagnosis and person-centered management as a key to successful nursing practice. Specific disease processes related to body systems are described and mechanisms of therapeutic options for management are evaluated. Evidence to support use of pharmacological, non-pharmacological, alternative and complementary treatments are evaluated.

This is a 3-credit hour course taught by two co-lecturers. Lectures are held twice weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:05 – 11:25 and include tutorials held on Wednesdays from 11:35 – 12:25. The final exam will be held during the week of November 26, 2018.

This appointment runs from September 1, 2018 through Nov. 30, 2018. The part-time academic instructor reports directly to the Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development of teaching and learning activities related to course-specific topics (e.g., pharmacology, pathophysiology)
  • Co-teach course content
  • Assessment and evaluation of student learning
  • Use of Brightspace for course delivery
  • Responding to student queries about coursework in collaboration with the other Co-Course Professor
  • Attending initial instruction with Instructional Learning Online services re: Brightspace
  • Participation in course discussions within the program
  • Develop and administer examinations
  • Submission of grades
  • Follow up with students as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Nursing, or related field, with a strong background in pharmacology including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pathophysiology. Prior teaching experience an asset.  PhD preferred.
