POSITION: Part-Time Academic DISP Statistics Instructor.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Dalhousie Integrated Science Program, Life Sciences Centre

PAY RATE: In accordance with CUPE Collective Agreement

PERIOD OF WORK: September 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019

WORK ASSIGNMENT:

The part-time academic will be responsible for the continued development and teaching of the Introductory Statistics component of the Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP) (see https://www.dal.ca/faculty/science/integrated-science-program.html), and the development and delivery of some integrated content and activities in collaboration with other DISP faculty. The position is valued at the equivalent of 6 credit hours over the fall and winter, although the duties are more heavily weighted in the fall term.

Responsibilities are as follows:

           1 - Instruction and coordination of Introductory Statistics content in SCIE 1506 (Fall term):              Deliver the statistics component of DISP, encompassing STAT 1060 content and additional                   content specific to DISP. The Statistics instructor will be expected to:

Develop and deliver ~ 20 lectures (1.5 h)
Run 16 tutorial sessions (1 h):
Continue developing 8-10 tutorial assignments, incorporating student-collected data
assist students during tutorial sessions
Supervise a teaching assistant (oversee marking of assignments)
Fulfill administrative duties associated with the statistics component (e.g., upload learning resources to Brightspace, upload grades, hold office hours)

2 – Instruction/design of the data literacy and research skills component (Winter term). The Writing in Science component of the Integrated Science Program includes scientific methodology, data literacy, and a research project, and is taught across fall and winter terms. The Statistics Instructor will assist with this component by
Providing written feedback to all students on one data-related writing assignment
Holding office hours to provide assistance to students in the analysis of their project data
Grading 3-4 research projects in entirety

 3 – Development of statistics materials for laboratories and field trips (Fall and Winter terms)
In collaboration with instructors for other subjects, design the data collection, analysis and reporting components of field trips and labs. The Statistics Instructor will
Develop the statistical component for 3 Biology field trips in fall term (design data sheets, compile student-collected data). Duties will include participation in 2 to 4 of the field trips.
Develop the statistical component for 3 laboratories activities (One each for Biology, Earth Science, Psychology) in winter term (design data sheets, compile student-collected data)  

 4 – Collaborative teaching and assessment (Fall and Winter term): Engage with instructors of the other subjects, and work collaboratively to deliver the statistics component as part of an integrated whole. The Statistics Instructor will
Attend weekly meetings with other Integrated Science faculty (fall and winter)
Help develop and participate in the delivery of two integrated lectures (80 minutes each) in which faculty explore a topic of interest in an interdisciplinary context (fall)
Help prepare, invigilate and mark midterm and final exam questions that are integrated with other subjects (fall and winter)
Provide year end feedback on, and revisions for the statistics curriculum by submitting a revised detailed statistics syllabus for 2019/2020, including explanations of recommended changes, and learning objectives for statistics lectures and tutorials (by April 30th) (winter term)
 
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:
A PhD graduate degree in Mathematics or Statistics or a related discipline completed or in progress with considerable experience applying statistics to data analysis in other fields of science. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in Introductory Statistics. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold values of equity, diversity, and inclusion within DISP.
