SPGC Call for Nominations for Faculty Senate Representative, Board of Governors

Posted by University Secretariat on January 15, 2018 in General Announcements

SENATE PLANNING AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR

FACULTY SENATE REPRESENTATIVE, BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Members of the University community who wish to submit nominations for a faculty Senate representative on the Board of Governors should send them to Kevin Hewitt, Chair, Senate Planning and Governance Committee, University Secretariat, Room 210, Henry Hicks Academic Administration Building, by January 31, 2018.

This position is for a threeyear term from July 1, 2018 to June 2021.

The nominee does not have to be a faculty Senator, but must hold an academic appointment of 50% fulltime equivalent or more in an Academic Unit. Senate is committed to diversity and inclusion and invites nominations from diverse candidates and individuals from equityseeking groups.

A faculty member who is a member of the DFA will be excluded from the bargaining unit while serving on the Board of Governors. The reason for the exclusion is that the Board is the employer at Dalhousie     and your participation at both the bargaining unit and the employer levels would be contrary to the requirements of the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act. Your terms and conditions of employment will thus not be directly covered by the Collective Agreement between the Board and the DFA, but they will probably not substantially change. Some terms and conditions in some individual cases may be affected (please contact Susan Brousseau for details).

FACULTY SENATE REPRESENTATIVE, BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Board of Governors of Dalhousie University is responsible for the overall conduct, management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of the university. The basic responsibility of the board is to represent the interests of the university in directing its affairs and to do so within the statutes relating to Dalhousie University.

The board carries out its responsibility through a stewardship role, and delegates the daytoday management of the university to the president and the senior administration. The board also respects the responsibility of the university senate to adopt policies on academic matters subject to board approval.

Key documents for potential nominees to review are:

  • Expectations of board members
  • Code of conduct
  • Roles and responsibilities

Senate has two elected faculty representatives on the Board of Governors, in addition to the Chair of Senate, who is also a member. Ms. Elaine Gibson, Schulich School of Law, is currently serving as the other faculty Senate representative on the Board of Governors from July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2020.

Please call Susan Brousseau, Director, University Secretariat at 4941598 if you have any questions regarding the call for nomination.
