Department of Chemistry

Director, Clean Technologies Research Institute and Associate Professor or Full Professor of Chemistry or Related Field

Applications are invited for the position of Director, Clean Technologies Research Institute (CTRI), and Associate Professor or Full Professor of Chemistry or related field.

The position requires a PhD degree or equivalent (DSc, DPhil, Dr. rer. nat., etc.) , postdoctoral experience, and an exceptional track record as an independent researcher. It is anticipated that the appointment will be made at the level of Associate Professor with Tenure, or higher, with primary appointment in the Department of Chemistry.

The successful candidate will be expected to direct the CTRI, a multi-faculty institute at Dalhousie designed to foster and enable broad scale research initiatives at Dalhousie in Clean Technologies (see https://www.dal.ca/dept/ctri.html). The CTRI includes members from the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Architecture, Agriculture, and Management, with a diverse range of activities including sustainable materials science and engineering, additive manufacturing, water, food, and natural resource management, and economic policy. The Director should be prepared to interact with these diverse groups to work toward grand challenges involving Clean Technologies. Activities would include taking a lead role in large scale research and education initiatives, under programs such as Strategic Partnership Grants, CFI, CREATE, CERC, and CFREF, as well as fostering collaborations at Dalhousie across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and between Dalhousie and other academic and industrial partners. In addition, the Director will maintain his/her own vigorous, independent research group, and be engaged in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preference will be given to candidates with research in materials for clean technologies, including but not limited to synthesis, analysis, physical properties, and device performance. Applications should be submitted electronically and consist of a single PDF file, containing contact information for three references, the CV, list of publications, a detailed research proposal (5 pages maximum including executive summary), and a separate two-page statement of how the proposed research program aligns with Dalhousie University’s Strategic Research Plan in the area of Clean Technologies and what initiatives the candidate would envision undertaking as Director of CTRI. In addition, please include in the PDF file a completed Self-Identification Questionnaire (www.dal.ca/becounted/selfid).

Dalhousie University, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is a leading research-intensive university with strengths in many disciplines and has been identified as one of Canada’s top 100 employers. Dalhousie’s Strategic Research Plan is available at:

http://www.dal.ca/research/about_research_atdal/PriorityResearchAreas.html

The application package should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, at chmchair@dal.ca.

Consideration of candidates will begin 1 February 2018 and continue until the position is filled.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. The university encourages applications from Aboriginal people, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
