Teaching Assistant Position

“Brewing Civilization: the history, science, and culture of beer”

HSTC 3415     WINTER TERM, 2018

Tuesday evenings: 6:35-9:25 pm

Brewing great beer has been a challenge for science and for engineering since ancient times. Drinking that beer has also played a central role in the history of civilization: culture, politics, economics, gender issues, morality, religion… all have had something to say about beer brewing and drinking.  This course follows the story of beer brewing & drinking from ancient civilizations to modern times. This lecture-format class will take an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on primary texts along with in-class presentations of brewing technology, as well as some off-campus field trips.

T. A. Duties:

·         attending lectures (3 hrs/week, Tuesday evenings, 6:35-9:25 pm)

·         assisting with marking (mid-term + term paper/project + final exam)

  • assisting students with comprehension and assignment/project during office hours (1/week)
  • proctoring

Qualifications and experience:

Candidates may come from various fields (this is a widely interdisciplinary programme) but should have at least an undergraduate degree. Graduates who have taken courses in or graduated from the HOST programme, or who have combined an interest in the sciences and the humanities in their education, are especially encouraged to apply. An interest particularly in the intersection of material, social and intellectual history will be helpful, as this will characterize the approach taken in this course. Students with background in food science or an interest in/experience of brewing are especially welcome.

Pay-scale
