Instructor/Senior Instructor Postings ‑ Animal Science and Aquaculture/Faculty of Agriculture

This position is located on the Truro campus.

The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture offers technical, undergraduate and graduate programs, including Animal Science, Bioveterinary Science, Veterinary Technology and Aquaculture. The campus has commercial level poultry and mink units, an Aquaculture centre, a functional dairy herd and sheep unit, and provides housing for horses as needed in the teaching program.

The instructor will have a primary role in the Veterinary Technology program but will also be responsible for developing and delivering courses within the undergraduate program and assisting with courses in the Diploma in Business Management program. Course areas include animal health and animal welfare, for both farm and companion animals. The successful candidate will be required to provide veterinary clinic instruction for Veterinary Technology students, including routine surgeries and medicine, take an active role in student supervision, assessment, and review of curriculum for this program.

The incumbent is required to be on shared call for veterinary emergencies in the veterinary technology teaching hospital, including evenings and weekends.

The successful candidate is required to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and have at least three years of experience in private practice (preference will be given to candidates with mixed practice experience.). At commencement of employment the candidate must be a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. The candidate must be experienced in routine surgery, anaesthesia, and companion animal medicine. Competence in advanced surgical techniques is an asset. Demonstrated ability or potential for teaching excellence. Specific training in companion animal behavior, immunology, or animal welfare are assets. Excellent written and oral communication skills and good interpersonal skills, including experience working with teams and experience working with veterinary technicians, are required. Education beyond the DVM degree in companion animal behavior, animal welfare, or liv! estock/equine medicine are assets. Teaching experience in the veterinary clinical environment is an asset, as is an interest in shelter medicine.

The instructor will have a primary role in the B.Sc Bioveterinary Science program but will also be responsible for developing and delivering courses within the B.Sc Agr Animal Science program, and as required, at the diploma level in animal science related courses for both farm and companion animals. The successful candidate will be required to provide classroom and laboratory instruction in the fields of animal biology, bioveterinary science, animal nutrition and physiology, vertebrate anatomy, animal health and behavior.

The incumbent will have primary responsibility for organizing and teaching the spring semester course in African Wildlife Ecology offered in South Africa. The incumbent will coordinate the Bioveterinary Science program under the direction of the Department Chair, act as primary advisor to students enrolled in the Bioveterinary Science program, and act as primary contact for this program with other universities and organizations. The incumbent may act as advisor to undergraduate students enrolled in the Honours programs and participate in graduate student committees.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Bioveterinary Science, or a related discipline. Experience in the preparation and delivery of university level credit courses and laboratory preparation is a requirement. Experience in student academic advising is an asset. Demonstrated excellence in diploma, undergraduate and graduate teaching and training is desired. The successful candidate will also possess resourcefulness, innovation, leadership skills, self-motivation, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
