STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR IN RESIDENCE

The Culture of the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship (NNCE)

This is not your typical nine to five kind of position. The Centre is results focused and we work as a team until the job is done, without reference to the clock and therefore flexibility in work hours is highly desired. The Centre works in a dynamic environment where ambiguity and having to pivot are the norm. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate that they will be comfortable in this environment by pointing to their past experience.

Job Description – Student Entrepreneur in Residence

The Student Entrepreneur in Residence exists to help scale the activities of Launch Dal and to create a student centric face with a particular emphasis on assisting with activities taking place in the Collider.

The primary goal of this position will be to foster stronger a stronger relationship between the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship and complimentary groups both internal to Dalhousie and outside, with particular emphasis on engineering and computer science.  A key responsibility would be establishing relationships with external faculties and organizations with the goal of recruiting students from diverse backgrounds, and developing potential partnerships. The primary focus would be internal departments such as:

* Faculty of Engineering (e.g. Dept Mechanical Engineering and Dept Electrical and Computer Engineering)

* Department of Oceanography within the Faculty of Science

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will act primarily to explore new avenues to enhance the Norman Newman Centre’s ability to promote and foster interest in entrepreneurship in the area of engineering, computer science and Ocean Technology of students within such departments. The candidate would determine the best methods to approach these groups and organize a series of events that would be:

* Tailored to the needs of the individual organization for which it is targeted

* Located in a space convenient for attendance of the targeted group (e.g. Sexton Campus for Engineering) or the Collider (Killam 2600)

* Include content pertinent to the interests of the respective group

* Guide the attendees to participate in other events presented by the Norman Newman Centre

* Facilitate growth of interest in entrepreneurship in these groups

The ideal candidate should be able organize and deliver such events.  As such the candidate would be able to identify key stakeholders in the departments within Dalhousie through which these objectives could be met. Additionally, it would be necessary for the candidate to have good knowledge of the fields of engineering and ocean technology and to possess excellent communication skills.

The candidate would also assist in:           

* Recruiting candidates for NNCE’s Launch Dal Program.

* Supporting the major events of the Centre including – Startup Weekend, and Canada’s Business Model Competition.

* Contributing to the ongoing efforts in our social media platforms

* Other duties as assigned

Education/Training & Relevant Experience

The ideal candidate will be a Dalhousie student (or recent graduate) that has participated in several of the activities and programs of the centre, attended at least one Start-up Weekend or similar event and taken the MGMT 3902 (BUSI 5902) Starting Lean course. The successful candidate will have had experience in working in an entrepreneurial environment. Experience in social media would be a bonus.

The recipient of this position must have:

* University or College level courses with a speciality in Engineering and robotics.

* Excellent analytical, organizational and communications skills, including written and verbal.

* Proven ability to implement and execute a broad and diverse range of projects.

* Highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills

* Strong presentation and networking skills

Duration:

November 4, 2016 to April 30, 2016  

Compensation:

TBD, dependent on experience 

Hours:

17.5 hours a week
