Media opportunity: Making friends with guilt: Dalhousie University author argues the painful emotion can be harnessed for good and should be embraced

Posted by Communications on January 5, 2026 in News

Guilt is one of the most powerful -- and unpleasant -- emotions we experience. When we feel it, we want it gone.

But a new book by Dalhousie University professor, Dr. Chris Moore, suggests it carries an important purpose we should learn not to ignore. In fact, we should embrace guilt if we want to improve our lives, our relationships and our mental health.

The Power of Guilt: Why We Feel It and Its Surprising Ability To Heal explores the psychological basis and evolutionary origins of guilt, its real purpose, how it affects us and why we should view it as a healthy emotion and even be grateful for it.

Drawing on extensive research into psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy, comparative religion and legal studies, as well as the author’s own foundational experiences with the emotion, Guilt offers a new perspective.

Dr. Moore is available to discuss his book and how a traumatic event as a young man profoundly reframed his understanding and acceptance of guilt.
