Posted by Communications and Marketing on May 29, 2025 in News

Dalhousie University is launching a new centre for mental health research that aims to reduce treatment gaps worldwide through innovations in care delivery, education, research and advocacy.

The Dalhousie Centre for Global Mental Health will be part of the university's Department of Psychiatry and will offer a range of innovative mental health and addiction research and educational programs with local, national and international impacts.

Its mission is to provide and promote research and educational programs through global partnerships to support the delivery of high quality and accessible mental health and addiction services, while reducing treatment gaps. It will also promote mental health literacy and resilience, with a focus on maintaining wellness and preventing illness onset.

The centre, being launched Friday, May 30, hopes to collaborate with the Pan American Health Organization and the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization, with plans to develop collaborations with institutions worldwide.

Dr. Vincent Agyapong, a professor and head of Dal's Department of Psychiatry, is leading the initiative and is available to discuss how it will work to develop accessible and cost-effective mental health programs to bring vital care to those who need it.
