Researchers at Dalhousie University are entering into an agreement with the Mexican government to collaborate on projects looking into the welfare of seasonal workers from the country and ways to improve working conditions at sites in Atlantic Canada.
Consul General Victor Treviñ will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the research team from Dalhousie and St. Thomas University in New Brunswick on behalf of Mexico on Oct. 25, following years of negotiations and collaboration in research and policy development.
Dr. Raluca Bejan, a professor in the Department of Social Work, leads the team that has been in talks with the Mexican consulate in Montreal, which oversees the Atlantic region and every year inspects housing for Mexican migrant labourers working on Nova Scotia farms.
Dr. Bejan and Mexican Consul for Protective Services Felipe Gonzalez Lugo Mendez are available to discuss this important five-year agreement and how it will foster collaborative research on the occupational and living experiences of seasonal workers in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
Media are welcome to attend the signing of the MOU:
