ESS Lecture Series: February Free Film Fest: Sand Wars (France 2014)

Every house and skyscraper, every bridge, airport and sidewalk in our modern society depends on sand. We use it to manufacture optical fibre, cellphone components and computer chips. Is sand an infinite resource? Can the existing supply satisfy the demand fuelled by construction booms? Based on encounters with sand smugglers, environmentalists, barefoot millionaires, corrupt politicians, and unscrupulous developers, this investigation takes us around the globe to unveil a new gold rush.
