Gilsig Series in Jewish Arts and Culture REGINA Composed by Elisha Denburg Libretto by Maya Rabinovitch (2014) Performed by Essential Opera Company
Regina explores the true story of Regina Jonas, the first woman to be ordained as a rabbi in the Jewish faith. Though Jonas struggled to gain recognition and perished at Auschwitz, her life bore inspiring fruit in 1991 when research uncovered the papers that proved her ordination. Enhanced by an introductory lecture by leading Jewish scholar Dr. Sara Horowitz, Denburg and Rabinovitch's new Canadian opera will offer audiences a moving way to meet Regina and the people who contributed to her legacy: her family, mentors, and eventual discoverer.
