On Saturday June 1, Dalhousie welcomed youth and families from across HRM to the faculties of Health and Dentistry for hands-on learning about health and wellness.

At this year’s Day of Active Learning, children and their families were able to explore spaces and activities focusing on healthy living. Among many other activities available on Dalhousie’s Carleton Campus, the School of Nursing welcomed visitors into the Simulation Lab, where the public was able to see, touch and listen to the heart, lungs and stomach of life-like mannequins.

Visitors were also able to interact with and unconventional device in the Joint Action Rehabilitation Lab — Nova Scotia’s most advanced treadmill, where researchers can test physical movements and capture a skeletal image of a person walking. Dalhousie students and faculty are currently using the lab to identify and prevent the causes of lower back pain.

In the Faculty of Dentistry, visitors got an up close and personal look at the Dentistry Building’s newly renovated, state-of-the art dental clinic and could watch students demonstrate their dental skills on high-tech mannequins in the lab.

This was the second annual Day of Active Learning, organized by Dalhousie’s Growing Communities series — a group comprised of volunteers from Dalhousie’s Human Resources department and Dalhousie Professional & Managerial Group. The series was created as a legacy of Dalhousie’s 200th anniversary and strives to service the needs of the community through Dal’s access to resources, services and partners. This year’s event was done in partnership with the United Way.
