In November, Dalhousie will play host to some of Canada’s finest researchers as part of the Royal Society of Canada’s Celebration of Excellence and Engagement.
The prestigious event will take place from Thursday, November 15 – Sunday, November 18, and provides an opportunity to honour the 2,200 RSC members who share in Canada’s cultural and academic history.
The Celebration of Excellence and Engagement will kick off on November 15 with a day-long symposium that will be held in the McInnes Room in the Student Union Building. With the theme of 200 Years on the Atlantic, this engaging event will celebrate the spirit and ingenuity of our people and the impact they are making around the world. Speakers include:
- Dr. Ford Doolittle
- Dr. Julia Wright
- Dr. Barbara Neis
- Dr. Randall Martin
- Dr. Marlon Lewis
- Dr. Chike Jeffers
The event will also include performances by students from the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Promoting a culture of knowledge and innovation
Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada’s mission is to recognize scholarly, research and artistic excellence, to advise governments and organizations, and to promote a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.
Currently, Dalhousie is home to 50 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, and 13 Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (a new initiative launched in 2014).
From 1945-1980, the RSC Celebration of Excellence was hosted in every province at least once, at 25 universities from coast to coast. In 2013, they resumed the practice of moving the AGM around the country, beginning with a visit to Banff, Alberta. This will be the first time that Dalhousie has ever hosted the event.
