Swimmers take home Athlete of the Week

Isabel Sarty, Swimming

First-year swimmer Isabel Sarty is this week’s MUSCLE MLK Female Athlete of the Week.

Isabel led the Tigers to a team win at the Kemp-Fry Invitational swim meet at Dalhousie University over the weekend.

She won the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events, all with U SPORTS qualifying times. She set a new Dalhousie record in the 200m and narrowly missed setting a new AUS and Dalhousie record in the 100m event. Isabel is currently ranked eighth and sixth in those events, respectively and her time in the 400m ranks her at eighth in the country. Her results also rank her in Dalhousie’s all-time top three performances.

Isabel also had two more wins as part of the Tigers 400m and 800m freestyle relay teams and placed second in the 800m freestyle race.

A science student, Isabel is from Halifax, N.S.

Other nominees: Jesse Rietveld (hockey), Julie Moore (volleyball)

Alec Karlsen, Swimming

Second-year swimmer Alec Karlsen is this week’s MUSCLE MLK Male Athlete of the Week.

Alec led the Tigers to a team win at the Kemp-Fry Invitational swim meet at Dalhousie University over the weekend.

He won three individual events over the course of the three-day meet including the 200m and 400m individual medleys (IM) and the 200m butterfly, reaching U SPORTS qualifying times in both the 400m IM and 200m butterfly events. He also set a new AUS and Dalhousie record in the 400m IM, bettering his time by more than three seconds over last year’s swim at the same event. The time gives him the number four spot in the U SPORTS rankings and he is currently 10th in the 200m butterfly.

Alec earned another first-place finish as part of the Tigers 800m freestyle relay team and was third in the 200m backstroke, which he swam just five minutes after winning the 400m IM.

A native of Boerum, Norway, Alec is a computer science student.

Other nominees: Adam Spragg (volleyball), Alex Carson (basketball)
