Financial support for graduate students
Scholarships and Fees
Financial support is provided to all full-time graduate students, with support through research and teaching awards. Financial aid is considered at the same time as admission, so a separate application is not necessary.
Support is normally available for a maximum of two years for Master of Science (MSc) students and four years for PhD students. Financial support is not normally available for part-time students.
Canadian citizens and landed immigrants are eligible for Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) scholarships. All incoming NSERC students are awarded an automatic $5,000 research assistantship (RA).
After acceptance by the Department, prospective graduate students of exceptional ability may become candidates for special scholarships such as the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarships. At the master's level, only newly entering students will be considered. Renewal is upon evidence of satisfactory performance at a required minimum level. Master's students may hold a Killam Scholarship for 24 months and PhD students for up to 36 months. The scholarships are currently valued at $20,000 for a master's program and $25,000 for a doctoral program.
