Physics Seminar: "How to Increase Enrollment in Undergraduate Physics: Some Ideas from the Literature"

Presented by: Laura Stiles-Clarke, Ph.D. Candidate at St. Francis Xavier University and part-time faculty member at Saint Mary's University.

Since the time of the Cold War, there has been public concern that there are not enough people graduating from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degree programs in North America. Physics is one of the fields most profoundly affected by decreasing enrollment trends. In particular, physics remains one of the subject areas most affected by underrepresentation of women and people of colour. I will discuss the research literature regarding these phenomena and offer some simple and not-so-simple strategies that physics faculty and staff can use to encourage more students, and a broader range of students, to persist in physics degree programs.
