Oceanography Special Seminar

The Oceanography Department will be hosting a special seminar with Professor Marek Stastna on Tuesday, April 4th at 2:00pm.

Dr. Marek Stastna
Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo

Title:
“A brief tour of the description and simulation of internal waves in the coastal ocean”

The coastal ocean is active on a vast number of length scales.  Due to the ubiquity of density stratification, many motions are influenced by the wave guide that a stable stratification provides.
In this talk I will review what internal waves are, how they manifest in different types of measurements, how they are described mathematically, and most importantly how they are simulated.  I will show detailed case studies of instances in which internal wave dynamics leads to motion on multiple scales. Such motion requires specialized techniques of high performance computing, and I will provide some information of the current “state of the art”.  If time permitting, I will discuss a number of future directions for study.
