Space for Aquaculture in the Mediterranean

Biography

Daniele Brigolin received his PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University Ca' Foscari of Venice in 2008. In 2012, he joined the Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics of the University of Venice as a researcher in Ecology with temporary appointment. His research focuses on the quantitative study of the direct and indirect effects of harvesting on ecosystem structure and dynamics. Particular interest was given to the sustainability of aquaculture productions in the Mediterranean, in the framework of the implementation of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture.

Abstract

The selection of sites and areas for aquaculture plays a key role in supporting the sustainable development of this industry, complying with current directives and policies aimed at preventing the deterioration of marine ecosystems. Nowadays, space selection can benefit from the information provided by remote sensing and operational oceanography, through the application of mathematical models. This talk draws a parallel between two model applications recently carried out in the Mediterranean Sea: i) the selection of coastal sites for finfish cage farming in Algeria, North Africa, where aquaculture development is recognized as a strategic objective by the central government, and ii) the selection of new areas for longline shellfish  farming in Emilia-Romagna, one of the top mussel producing regions in Europe. A methodology based on a Spatial Multi Criteria Evaluation provided the framework to integrate mathematical models and operational oceanography products. The procedure allows to combine the quality of a site for aquaculture use with the conservation of endangered benthic habitats (e.g. Posidonia oceanica meadows in Algeria).
