Research Interests

Dr. Sagebien’s long-term interests revolve around Cuban political economy and economic reform. She has conducted academic research and advanced policy initiatives dealing with social innovation, sustainability, inclusive markets, social enterprise, social and solidarity economy and corporate responsibility (CSR). She also maintains an active research interest in Canada–Latin American relations, with a focus on corporate responsibility in the mining sector. She has published and lectured on the need for more responsible business school curricula.

  • Senior Fellow, Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL), a Canadian think-tank on Latin America
  • Senior Fellow, Forum Empresa, a network of hemisphere-wide corporate social responsibility organizations
  • Member of the Policy Council for Engage Cuba, a bipartisan organization dedicated to mobilizing American businesses and non-profit groups to support the ongoing U.S.–Cuba normalization process
  • 2006  Dalhousie Student Union Teaching Excellence Award for the Faculty of Management
  • 1990, 1994  Commerce Professor of the Year, Saint Mary’s University
