Workplace Experience Program


What is the Workplace Experience Program?

  • It is an opportunity for international students who have little or no work experience in Canada to spend time with an organization that hires co-op students, and experience Canadian workplace culture.
  • The program will take place this summer while you are studying, or after exams.
  • It is intended for 1st or 2nd year students.
  • It is not a co-op work term.
  • It is not a paid job.  

Program Benefits

There are many benefits to participating in the Workplace Experience Program.  As a program participant, you will be able to spend time in the Canadian workplace, learning about Canadian workplace culture and expectations.  Through this experience, you may have the opportunity to observe different roles within the workplace, participate in workplace discussions and activities, and receive valuable feedback to help you build confidence in your Canadian job search.  

In addition, students can receive recognition for their participation in the program by adding it to their Co-Curricular Record.

How To Apply

Please note that the Workplace Experience Program will not be offered for the 2017-2018 academic year. The program is expected to return in 2019. Please check back at that time for information on how to apply.

Q. What is the Workplace Experience Program?
A. The Workplace Experience Program (WEP) provides international students who possess little to no Canadian work experience with an opportunity to spend time with a local host organization to experience Canadian workplace culture. 

Q. Do I need to apply to be part of WEP?
A. Yes, international students must apply to be part of WEP.  Information on how to apply can be found under the How to Apply section of this webpage.   

Q. Who can apply?
A. The program is open to 1st or 2nd year international students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program that have little to no Canadian work experience. 

Q. When does the WEP take place?  
A. The WEP takes place during the summer after your 1st or 2nd year.

Q. What if I’m taking classes during the summer?
A. Our host organizations understand that your academics are your first priority and will work with you to accommodate your schedule. 

Q. How long do I spend with a host organization?
A. Employers are invited to host an international student for approximately 35 hours in total.  This schedule is flexible so that is can be coordinated to fit the needs of both the host organization and the student. 

Q. Do I get to pick my host organization?
A. While we try our best to match students with host organizations that align with their industry of interest, we cannot guarantee that students will be placed with an organization of their choice. 

Q. Can this count as a co-op work term?
A. WEP cannot count as a co-op work term.

Q. Is the experience paid?
A. Your time with the host organization is unpaid.
