"You're Hired" Interview Competition

All students from the Commerce, Management and CRMBA programs are welcome to register and participate in the next “You’re Hired” Interview Competition, sponsored by Scotiabank

The 2018 competition will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 24 with the finals happening on Friday, Jan. 26. Your participation in the “You’re Hired” Interview Competition will provide the following benefits:

  • Development of your written communication skills (profiles, resumes and cover letters)
  • Development of your oral communication skills (elevator pitches and interviewing)
  • The opportunity to network with employers
  • The prospect of employment with Scotiabank
  • A chance to win the Dr. Sunny Marche Memorial Award of $1,000 cash.
  • Gain recognition for your participation in the competition by adding it to your Co-Curricular Record.

Your Participation

To determine the top two finalists, participating students will be shortlisted through three sections of the competition.

Round 1: Resume and Cover Letter Scoring (application package including resume and cover letter deadline is EXTENDED to Sunday, Jan. 9, 2018).

Participating students will be provided with a mock job description [PDF, 146KB] to develop a tailored resume and cover letter. Students must submit their completed resume and cover letter to be entered in the competition. All applications will be scored with the top 24 students moving on to Round 2.

Round 2: Elevator Pitches and Mock Interview Scoring (Wed., Jan. 24, 2018)

The selected 24 students will present a 1-minute elevator pitch to a panel of employer partners. Each student’s elevator-pitch will be scored. Following the elevator pitches, our employer partners will serve as mock interviewers. Using the same interview questions, each student will have a 15-minute interview, which will also be scored. The two students with the highest scores will move on to Round 3, the final stage of the competition.

Round 3: Live Interview Competition (Fri, Jan. 26, 2018)

The top three finalists (2 from Dalhousie and 1 from Saint Mary’s University) will be interviewed by a panel of judges in front of a live audience. To engage and educate the audience about the interview process, the judge’s notes will be projected behind the student as they are being interviewed. Each interview will be scored to determine the winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I don't have any work experience related to the mock job description, do I still have a chance to advance in the competition?
A. Absolutely. You do not need to have finance-related experience in order to apply or compete. What is important is that you can demonstrate that you possess transferable skills that support what the job requires. Remember to also draw on your volunteer experience, course work, and extra-curricular activities to demonstrate how you might be a match for the role. In our 2014 competition, one of the finalists was a first year Commerce student whose only prior work experience was as a tree-planter. She advanced in the competition by connecting her transferable skills and volunteer experiences to the position.

Q. Do I have to be a finance major to participate?
A. No, you do not have to be a finance major to participate. We encourage all Commerce, Management, and CRMBA students to apply, regardless of their majors, as the competition is designed to be a valuable learning and career development experience for all.

Q. Which employers will be participating in the event?
A. Employers will include representatives from a cross-section of industries. This will allow participants to gain exposure to different lines of business, build their network, and gain important feedback from a variety of employer perspectives.
