Expanding Your Reach

Expanding Your Reach: Successful Global Business Strategies

This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of international business and competition from a manager's perspective. The issues and problems, which arise when business operations or institutions extend across national boundaries and become international in scope or character, will be examined.

The emphasis is two-fold. First, consideration is given to the characteristics and contemporary dynamics of the world economy. Second, analysis is made of the emergence and development of the multinational firm and of the adaptations of the basic managerial functions due to internationalisation.

This course uses a comprehensive approach to creating international business strategies. It is accomplished through an exploration of various environmental, societal and organizational factors that affect the way organizations operate on a global scale. The course embraces the interconnectedness of the world and helps participants gain the ability to manage organizations looking for a global perspective. It provides a knowledgeable understanding of the various organizational and environmental facets that shape the firm at both the local and global level.

This highly interactive course will enable participants to:

  • Explain how political, economic, and legal systems collectively influence a country's ability to achieve meaningful economic progress.
  • Discuss how culture is different because of differences in social structure, religion, language, education, economic philosophy, and political philosophy.
  • Assess the costs and benefits of foreign direct investment to receiving and source countries.
  • Interpret the three basic decisions that a firm contemplating foreign expansion must make: which markets to enter, when to enter, and on what scale.
