The purpose of this course is to examine and understand the organizational dimensions of governance and public management as they pertain to the Canadian parliamentary system within the framework and context of federalism.

Exploring, Cultivating and Identifying with Creativity, Jan. 18 - Feb. 13, 2021

Where does the inspiration for truly innovative ideas come from? This course provides tools and methods to structure personal ideation processes. Following an introduction to the concept of creativity in its manifest forms, and the role of creativity and innovation in organizations and institutions, learners will become familiar with creative problem-solving processes used in art, design, business, government, not-for-profits, and social enterprises. They will use these new skills to identify problems and generate creative solutions.

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to do the following:

Exploring Innovation, Feb. 22 - Mar. 20, 2021

This course moves from creative idea generation to the practicalities of transforming a novel idea into an innovative and workable solution or product using the processes of human-centred and value proposition design. Participants learn to use empathy and understanding to listen to customer needs, the art of thinking and acting strategically, how to accurately assess the market or organizational appetite for innovation, and how to test assumptions and build business and service models. Course includes an introduction to the entrepreneurial mindset and how to use it to address the realities and challenges of the innovation process in any setting whether in their own venture or within an organization or institution.

The purpose of this course is to understand the policymaking process and the role of financial accounting and accountability within the context of the policy process.

  • Develop an understanding of policy formulation, including instruments and rationales for their selection;

The Entrepreneurial Mindset: From Innovation to Adoption, March 29 - April 24, 2021

The next steps in the innovation process are implementation or launch, adoption of the product or service, and continuous improvement and innovation. Business concepts covered will include positioning, financing, and risk assessment, along with strategy and entrepreneurship frameworks that can be applied during transfer to market or service/process implementation, along with essential skills such as networking, collaboration, change management, and stakeholder engagement. Participants will build skills to strengthen their capacity to continuously innovate, including resilience, adaptability, optimism and use of the design crit.
