The Schulich School of Law would like to extend a warm welcome to Brendan Barrett, the new director of Student and Academic Affairs. He joined the law school in June, coming from Saint Mary’s University, where he served as deputy registrar following nearly 20 years of senior leadership roles in post-secondary education.

Get to know Brendan

Brendan has a deep personal connection to Dalhousie University, where his grandfather graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, and his late brother, Sean, was a professor until his passing in 2024. He is proud to continue his meaningful family legacy.

Can you provide an overview of your responsibilities in this role? 

I am responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Associate Dean, Academic. This includes advising students on academic challenges, concerns, requirements, planning, and strategies for success.

That support can take many forms, from helping students interpret law school and broader university policies and processes to talking through complex or uncertain situations they may encounter in their learning environment.

Can you highlight your previous work experience and education?

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Brock University and am currently completing a Master of Education with a focus on Administration, Policy and Leadership and Adult and Postsecondary Education.

I began my career at Brock as an academic advisor before moving to the Goodman School of Business, where I coordinated graduate programs. I later advanced into senior leadership roles overseeing critical institutional operations, including academic timetabling, student records, systems, and convocation.

Before joining Weldon, I served as deputy registrar at Saint Mary’s University.

What attracted you to this position at the law school?

I was drawn to this role because it combines my passion for supporting students and faculty with my interest in academic policies and regulations.

I was also inspired by the law school’s commitment to the Weldon Tradition of unselfish public service, a value that strongly resonates with me. 

How will you support law students throughout their time here?

My goal is to help students navigate their course choices and support them throughout their academic journey so they can achieve both their academic and personal goals.

What is the most satisfying part of helping students? 

The most satisfying part of helping students is seeing them walk across the stage at convocation and having the opportunity to celebrate their success.
