On Saturday February 4, students from the Schulich School of Law will unite with law students across Canada for legal research relating to the recent travel bans in the United States and Canada’s responsibility to respond to the situation. This event will mark the first time that Canadian law students have coordinated an effort of this magnitude.
This "research-a-thon" will focus on gathering information to use in possible legal challenges to the Safe Third Country Agreement. It will also support the ongoing work of the Canadian Council for Refugees by raising funds for any litigation and future action.
More than 600 law students from 22 Canadian law schools, in addition to support from professors and alumni are participating in the event. In less than 24 hours, the project went from a local initiative at the McGill Faculty of Law to a nationwide mobilization with simultaneous events confirmed at law schools across the country.
"We are mobilizing law students across the country to help support the work the Canadian Council for Refugees is currently doing,” explains Ria Guidone, VP Student Life, Dalhousie Law Students' Society.
“We want to come together as a united front, with a message that the next generation of lawyers will not stand by while legislation like the Safe Third Country Agreement puts individuals at risk”, says Kym Sweeny, Executive Director of the Student Advocacy Society at Dalhousie.
