Course Selection

1. Review Course Availability and Restrictions

To review course options, please consult the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 timetables and course descriptions . Please contact the Administration Assistant for Graduate Studies with questions: gclaw@dal.ca 902-494-2776

First year courses, mandatory upper year courses, Placements, Moots and Exchanges are not open to graduate students.

All other upper year courses are open to graduate students with one significant caveat.  Graduate students must write substantial papers (worth at least 75% of the grade) in all courses in which they are enrolled, regardless of the mode of evaluation established for JD students. Before registering for a course normally evaluated by something other than a minimum 75% paper, you must seek permission from the instructor and submit a completed (LLM Mode of Evaluation Form ) [PDF-76KB].

Graduate students are not permitted to register for intensive courses for credit.  However, it may be possible for you to audit such courses – written permission of the instructor is required (Course Audit Request Form) [PDF-49KB].

Directed Research Paper course can give you the flexibility to work with a faculty member on a topic that is not available for study through a course already on offer. You must have secured permission of the Faculty member before it will be possible to register for a Directed Research Paper course (Directed Research Paper Request) Form [PDF-47KB].

2. Discuss course options with your Supervisor / Mentor

3. Complete the Course Planning Form (Thesis [PDF-216KB], Coursework [PDF-213])

Once you and your Supervisor/ Mentor have agreed upon your courses, please send selections , via e-mail to gclaw@dal.ca. The Associate Dean, Graduate Studies will review your choices and an email will be sent to you with registration details once they have been approved.
