New Ventures Fund

The School of Nursing’s Alumni Fund for New Ventures Development supports current faculty or student led relevant and rigourous projects that advance the mission and goals of the School of Nursing’s Academic Plan [PDF-360Kb]. The source of funding is the generous donations to nursing at Dalhousie University.  Reports of funded projects will be posted on the School of Nursing website.

Eligibility Criteria:  Faculty and Students are eligible to apply for this fund.

1.  Faculty

Faculty may apply for funding to:

  • Support innovative course development and teaching/learning strategies consistent with scholarly environment
  • Facilitate consultation by external educators/practitioners/researchers to enable innovation in education, practice and research within the School of Nursing community
  • Support innovations that will have the direct result of increasing the visibility of the School of Nursing within the nursing community and/or within the community in general
  • Support innovations that enhance partnerships, research collaborations and funding       opportunities.

2.  Students & Post Doctoral Fellows

Dalhousie Nursing Students (undergraduate and graduate) may apply for funding to:

  • Attend/participate in local, provincial, national, international and interprofessional initiatives  that are aligned with the Academic Plan.
  • Present papers/posters at scientific/professional conferences
  • Support innovations that will have the direct result of increasing the visibility of the School of Nursing within the nursing community and/or within the community in general.
  • Support innovations that enhance partnerships, research collaborations and funding opportunities.

Award

The maximum award is $3,000 per project. Based on established criteria, proposals are scientifically reviewed, scored and recommendations for funding made by the Research & Scholarly Development Committee. Final funding decisions will be made by a group consisting of the Director of the School, the Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies and Associate Director, Graduate Studies or Director designates.

Reimbursement of Expenses

The funds cannot be advanced but instead the recipient will be reimbursed upon presentation of original receipts and completion of claim forms.  Upon project completion, a Travel Expense Claim form or a cheque requisition form, along with original receipts and boarding passes (if applicable), must be completed and submitted to the Research Coordinator at the School of Nursing for reimbursement. The claims must be submitted within three weeks of completion.  Eligible travel expenses are generally limited to meals transportation, hotel and registration (must be aligned with the Dalhousie University travel guidelines). Application

  1. Please complete the Application Form [Word Doc - 19 Kb] and send as a single pdf by email to julie.barry@dal.ca
  2. Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria:
  • Relevance to the Mission of the School’s Academic Plan [PDF- 360 Kb]
  • Clarity
  • Feasibility (time and resources to achieve the outcomes)
  • Alignment with eligibility criteria
  • Whether the project has been partially funded or received no previous funding
  • Students will be given priority over Faculty
  • Undergraduate Students will be given priority over Graduate Students

3. Those funded will be required to:

  • Present the project or poster at a School of Nursing scholarly session.
  • Submit an abstract and photographs (if available) for inclusion in a School of Nursing newsletter.

Note: Submissions should be prepared in accordance with the template provided on the Recipient Report Form [Word 11 Kb]. The deadline for abstracts is within three weeks of return from travel.

  • Publications, reports and/or presentations arising from work supported the New Ventures Fund must acknowledge the Fund: “This work was supported by a grant from the New Ventures Fund, School of Nursing, Dalhousie University”.  A copy of all published work should be forwarded to:
