Make a career out of making a difference

As caregivers, researchers and policy advocates, nurses are among the most respected and influential members of the health care community. Nurses are in demand, and Dalhousie’s School of Nursing can help you find your place in the profession.

A nursing degree prepares you for career options that are as diverse as they are rewarding. Your future could be found in the following places:

  • Hospitals: Nurses are essential to hospital departments like Emergency, Oncology, Pediatrics and Mental Health.
  • Homes: Home care nurses deliver support and comfort to patients.
  • Schools: Educational institutions look to nurses to provide advice on topics like nutrition, sexuality and mental health.
  • Research centres: Nurses are at the forefront of health-related research.
  • Industry: Private-sector organizations consult nurses about workplace safety and employee health.
  • Communities: Nurses support community health organizations and promote health-positive public policy.

Opportunity and flexibility

As a nurse, you can strengthen your ties to home or follow work opportunities around the world. You can fight disease or focus on preventative care. You can work with patient populations of all ages. You can do all of this on a full or part-time basis, with the flexibility to design a schedule that fits your needs.

A range of learning locations

Flexibility also applies to your learning at the School of Nursing. In addition to the Halifax campus, we also offer undergraduate programs in Yarmouth and at the Nunavut Arctic College, in the Northwest Territories.

Is Nursing for you?

If you’re wondering whether Nursing is the right path for you, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I enjoy working with people?
  • Am I interested in disease prevention and/or health promotion?
  • Do I consider compassion an important part of health care?
  • Do I have an interest in health care policy?
  • Am I a good problem-solver and critical thinker?
  • Can I make decisions in a fast-paced environment?
  • Am I an ethical, accountable and responsible person?

If you answer "yes" to these questions, you may be suited for a career in nursing.
