Diploma in Emergency Health Services Administration (DEHSM)

The School of Health Administration offers an undergraduate diploma program in Emergency Health Services Management (DEHSM). The program is designed for individuals working in emergency health services organizations, desiring academic healthcare management skills. The program meets the needs of students:

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the Dalhousie University undergraduate admission requirements to warrant consideration of admission into this program. 
  • Applicants require university preparation (you may not apply from high school).
  •  Application forms can be completed online or downloaded and should be submitted as early as possible.

Application deadlines are:

  • March 1 for September start
  • November 15 for January start
  • March 15 for May start

A complete application consists of the following documents:

  • A completed application form and fee
  • An official transcript of the record of academic work done
  • Mature students should include a letter indicating  activities since leaving high school and reasons for expecting to successfully complete the DEHSM if  admitted
  • One letter of reference (academic or professional)
  • Resume/curriculum vitae
  • TOEFL (international applications)

Curriculum

The one-year program features both academic and results-oriented curriculum.  Students accepted into the DEHSM program take the following half credit classes:

HESA 4000 - Canadian Healthcare Delivery System
HESA 4004 - Healthcare Planning
HESA 4005 - Healthcare Financial Management
HLTH 4040 - Health Law for Non-Lawyers
HESA 4400 - Introduction to Healthcare Economics

Winter Semester - Required Courses
HESA 4010 - Management Process and Human Resource Issues in EHS
HESA 4020 - Quality Improvement in EHS
HESA 4200 - Epidemiology for Managers

Summer Semester - Required Courses

HESA 4030 - EHS Systems Design
HESA 4040 - Principles of Community Based EHS

Program Delivery

Managers in the EHS environment require a broad base of technical skills and knowledge to perform efficiently and effectively.  The program aims to provide participants with the practical skills and tools needed to effectively manage an EHS operation.  Throughout the program, participants will apply concepts to cases and assignments customized for an EHS environment.

The courses are designed to:

  • facilitate a process of learning within the context of current knowledge
  • actively develop new and expanded personal  knowledge for communication
  • incorporate activities that encourage collaborative learning.

The course is conducted through the Internet and web-based conferencing with a product called Brightspace.  Students direct their own learning.  Brightspace consists of a suite of tools, which provide mechanisms for interactive exercises, such as group discussions, presentations, and information sharing.  The course uses texts and required readings and on-line learning technology for recommended readings, lessons, and course activities (e.g. assignments, tests, self tests, etc.).
