Field Placements and Forms

Agency field instructors

The field component of social work education has consistently been reported to be one of the most rewarding experiences of the degree. Students interface with outstanding social service agencies and social work practitioners and clients in a real world setting and develop direct practice skills to prepare for career opportunities after graduation.

Many individuals throughout the municipality, province, and country contribute to the education of Social Work students through offering and supervising student placements. They represent a wide range of agencies and organizations including: community based, non-profit, government, physical/mental health and addiction prevention and treatment services. Their invaluable assistance is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.

Field education

The Field Practicum and Seminar course consists of a 700 hour placement at a community agency plus participation in a concurrent integrated seminar.

The BSW Program Field Manual [PDF - 2.7 MB] will introduce you to Field Education at the Dalhousie University School of Social Work, including the Field Education course objectives, student submission information, goals, and expectations, as well as the responsibilities of the agency, instructor, student and faculty advisors.

Field Education at the School of Social Work is based on adult education principles which build on existing knowledge and experience.

The student becomes proficient in situations requiring intervention, and can recognize the need for influencing policy, program or process within the placement agency in order to carry out professional responsibilities.
