What happens after your referral

Who is eligible?

Once we receive your application, it will be reviewed and eligibility will be confirmed. Individuals accepted into the Dalhousie Hearing Aid Assistance Program (Community Services) must:

  • have a hearing loss that can be helped with hearing aids (as determined by our audiologist) and
  • receive Income Assistance from Community Services of the Government of Nova Scotia and
  • have no access to other sources of funding for hearing aids.

What does it cost?

If your application for new hearing aids is accepted, the hearing aids, earmolds (if needed), hearing aid programming, and follow-up services will be provided at no cost.  There will be a limited warranty on the hearing aid devices. A supply of batteries is provided with the hearing aids.

What happens if my application is accepted?

You will be contacted to let you know if you are eligible for the DHAAP-CS program. If eligible, an initial appointment will be set up. The first appointment will include a comprehensive assessment of your hearing status and communication needs. If you are a hearing aid candidate, an “impression” of your ear may be taken with a soft material during this initial appointment. You will receive the hearing aids on the second appointment.  Hearing aid programming will be completed. Instructions will be provided to ensure you are comfortable with the care and maintenance of the hearing aids. Educational information will also be provided. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled. The follow-up appointment is very important to check the hearing aids and ensure any issues are addressed with the audiologist. Further follow-up appointments needed after this will be discussed with you at that time.
