Occupational Therapy students Morgan Hall and Nikki Ross recently completed an 8 week clinical fieldwork placement at the Sunrise Adult Training Centre (SRC) in the Cayman Islands. SRC provides training, support and services for the empowerment, employment and independence of adults with disabilities. Phillip Knowles, an occupational therapist who acted as a preceptor for Morgan and Nikki during their placement, had positive comments about their contributions saying "They have embraced this opportunity with sincerity and enthusiasm and we have been blessed to have such wonderful professional students to work with our young adult Caymanians who face a variety of significantly challenging disabilities."
The students also have positive things to say about their experiences at Sunrise, with Morgan stating "Travelling to the Cayman Islands for a student fieldwork placement has been an incredible opportunity. I have had time to develop my knowledge and skills with a wonderful staff and group of clients at the Sunrise Adult Training Centre, as well as explore this beautiful country and culture. I would highly recommend this experience to other students."
The clients at SRC also have glowing reviews of Morgan and Nikki, describing them as "cool" and "hard working." One of the activities that the students devised for the SRC clients is a group program called "Circles" to teach them about personal boundaries. During their time in the Cayman Islands, Morgan and Nikki also had the opportunity to shadow occupational therapists with the Department of Education. Sunrise intends to continue developing their relationship with the School of Occupational Therapy, and hopes to host additional placements in the future.
