Registered nurses wanting to gain advanced skills and education in mental health and addictions care now have the opportunity to do so in Nova Scotia through a new Dal program.

Designed to meet the needs of the Canadian paramedic profession, Dalhousie University’s unique, purpose-built Bachelor of Health Science — Emergency Medical Services Management (BHSc EMS Management) program is set to launch in January 2024.

This unique funding opportunity is directly aimed at Indigenous communities and organizations. Among its primary objectives is to support Indigenous communities to lead research according to their own health research priorities, generating solutions that support improvements to individual and community health and wellbeing, and advancing self-determination in research and research oversight.

Shoppers Drug Mart has made a transformative $2.5 million gift to Dalhousie’s Faculty of Health to support diversity and inclusion in health education, and research that aligns with Nova Scotia’s health transformation agenda, Action for Health.

The Diversity Exchange was created when School of Physiotherapy assistant professor Dr. Caitlin McArthur was looking for images for presentations for her class and noticed there was a big lack of diversity in currently available stock photos. She says they were mainly white people who looked affluent and in good health, and were often doing ineffective exercises or exercises incorrectly. It became clear she wanted to create an ethnoculturally diverse image library for her and others in the profession so diverse students could be represented.

After years devoted to its development, a new elective course entitled Centering Black Canadian Health (HLTH 2000) is a much-needed, and highly anticipated, addition to the Faculty of Health’s curriculum.

Dr. Kyle Wilby, Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, is leading the project PrEP-Rx - Pharmacist Prescribing of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in Nova Scotia.
