Join our team: Part‑time job opportunities for grad students

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is looking to hire current graduate students for part-time roles starting this summer. One Graduate Student Experience Assistant position is available, as are nine graduate student mentor positions as part of the Together@Dal: Grad Edition orientation program.

Graduate Student Experience Assistant

The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is hiring a Graduate Student Experience Assistant to support the Graduate Student Professional Development (Grad PD) program at Dalhousie University.  The Graduate Student Experience Assistant will also be responsible for organizing and facilitating other programming and initiatives for graduate students, as needed.

One of the goals of FGS is to work in partnership with graduate students to encourage their professional development. Join our amazing team to build your leadership, organizational, and communication skills. The duties of this position may include, but will not be limited to:

  • Respond to inquiries regarding professional development activity requirements
  • Send invitations and feedback forms to participants and keep track of records
  • Assist with the ongoing collection and arrangement for materials in Brightspace (Dal GradPD Certificate and Together@Dal: Grad Edition)
  • Set room bookings and outreach to support communication of programming
  • Assist with logistics, planning, and various administrative duties to support programming and initiatives for graduate student professional development

The successful applicant will be expected to be available for regular virtual meetings with Dr. Mabel Ho (Director of Professional Development and Student Engagement, FGS) and will be guided and supported in this position.

Status of Appointment
The position will require an average of 10 working hours per week from July 5, 2021 to March 31, 2022.  Hours can be flexible week to week, but the incumbent will be required to meet with Dr. Ho on a weekly basis, and to attend specific events. The hourly rate of pay will be $18.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay). 

Eligibility
This position is open to graduate students at Dalhousie University. The successful candidate must maintain registration as a Dalhousie graduate student for the duration of the appointment. 

Criteria for Selection
The successful candidate will have an aptitude for: attention to detail, organization and time management, excellent academic writing in English, critical reading, and strong inter-personal and communication skills. Previous experience in using Brightspace and opinio, various Microsoft applications, and campus engagement will be considered an asset.

Graduate Mentors

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is hiring graduate mentors for the Together@Dal: Grad Edition (T@DGE) virtual orientation program.  T@DGE welcomes incoming graduate students to the Dalhousie community, introduces them to campus resources and supports, and connects them with current graduate students to support this transition.

We are recruiting nine graduate mentors who are interested in providing online information sessions (known as #gradchat sessions) and sharing their experiences at Dalhousie with incoming students.

One of the goals of FGS is to work in partnership with graduate students to encourage their professional development. Join our amazing team to build your leadership and communication skills.  You will receive recognition of work as you can add T@DGE: Grad Mentor to your Co-Curricular record.

The duties of this position may include, but will not be limited to:

  • Attending training sessions
  • Facilitating online weekly #gradchat sessions to connect with incoming graduate students
  • Meeting new graduate students and directing them to appropriate resources
  • Participating in discussion boards and making a short welcome video

Successful applicants will be expected to be available for regular virtual meetings with Dr. Mabel Ho (Director of Professional Development and Student Engagement, FGS) and will be guided and supported in this position.

The position will require a total of 48 hours from July 5, 2021 to January 31, 2022.  Hours will mainly be in July – mid September and end of November to mid-January.  The hourly rate of pay will be $15.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).
